Why a small bathroom is the best room for zellige
A powder room is where handmade tile earns its price. The variation in a zellige wall is read at close range — the pooled glaze at each hand-cut edge, the slight difference between one tile and the next — and in a small room the viewer is always close. The same tile across a large, dim floor loses most of what you paid for.
It is also the room where a dark colour is least risky. Oxblood, maroon and palm grove all absorb light; in a powder room that reads as considered rather than oppressive.
Walls, floors and what to seal
Zellige is a wall tile. On a bathroom floor the glaze is slick when wet and the surface crazes, so the floor wants bejmat or a cement tile instead — both are made for underfoot and both come in the same colour language.
Glazed tile needs nothing but sealed grout. Unglazed terracotta on a bathroom floor can work well but must be sealed properly and kept sealed, because a bathroom floor stays damp longer than any other floor in the house.
Common Questions
Can zellige tile be used in a bathroom?
Yes, on walls — vanity splashbacks, feature walls and powder rooms are ideal. For the floor use bejmat or cement tile: zellige glaze is slippery when wet and is not made to be walked on.
Does zellige tile work in a small bathroom?
It is arguably the best room for it. The glaze variation is only readable close up, so a small space shows off handmade tile far better than a large one does.
What grout should I use in a bathroom?
A sealed grout, matched to the glaze if you want the wall to read as one surface. The tile is non-porous; the grout is the part that has to keep water out.
