A feature wall, not a whole room

Zellige works in a living room as a defined surface — the wall behind a fireplace, a bar back, an alcove, the wall behind a media unit — rather than as the whole envelope. The variation that makes it beautiful on eight square feet becomes noise across eighty.

On a large living-room floor, our cement tiles and bejmat are the better answer. Both are made to be walked on, both come in patterns that hold up at scale, and both sit comfortably next to a zellige feature wall.

Choosing a colour for a big room

The greens and the softer reds behave like neutrals at scale — Desert Sage, Sea Mist and Rose Clay all read as a warm or cool wash rather than as a colour. The darker glazes are better kept to a smaller, closer surface.

Living rooms usually have the most natural light and the most lamps in the house, which means a glaze will look different in that room at four o'clock and at nine. A sample in the actual room, at both times, is worth more than any photograph.

Common Questions

Can you tile a living room feature wall in zellige?

Yes — a chimney breast, an alcove or a bar back is ideal. Keep it to a defined surface rather than the whole room; the glaze variation is an asset on a feature wall and visual noise across a very large one.

What tile is best for a living room floor?

Bejmat or a handmade cement tile. Both are floor formats built for traffic, and both pair with a zellige feature wall in the same space.

Which colours work in a big living room?

The muted greens and softer reds — Desert Sage, Sea Mist, Rose Clay — behave like neutrals at scale. Save Oxblood and Palm Grove for a smaller surface seen close up.
